The internal division of the Mylodontidae is complex and much debated. Mylodonts appeared as early as the Oligocene, with Paroctodontotherium from Salla-Luribay in Bolivia among their earliest records. The hind foot is also distinctly rotated so that the sole points inward. The posterior teeth have a round or oval cross-section, while the anteriormost have a canine-like design. This is often associated with a greater adaptation to grassy foods. Prominent features are found in their high-crowned teeth, which deviate from those of the Megatherioidea with a rather flat (lobate) occlusal surface. The Mylodontidae form one of the most diverse groups within the sloths. Within the Mylodontoidea are the two-fingered sloths of the genus Choloepus, one of the two extant sloth genera. Molecular genetic studies and protein analyses assign a third to these two groups, the Megalocnoidea. In a classical view, based on skeletal anatomical studies, the Mylodontoidea in turn represent one of the two major evolutionary lineages of sloths, along with the Megatherioidea. Within this they are often grouped together with the Orophodontidae and the Scelidotheriidae in the superfamily Mylodontoidea (sometimes, however, the Scelidotheriidae and the Orophodontidae are considered only as a subfamily of the Mylodontidae). The Mylodontidae represent a branch of the suborder of sloths (Folivora). Urumacotherium is an extinct genus of the also extinct family Mylodontidae. It lived from the Middle Miocene to the Early Pliocene of what is now Brazil, Peru and Venezuela. His line “Doesn’t anyone love me? Doesn’t anyone care about Sid the Sloth?!” is often quoted and parodied.Urumacotherium (meaning 'Urumaco beast') is an extinct genus of ground sloths of the family Mylodontidae. Sid the Sloth has also become a meme, usually featuring one of his bizarre facial expressions or using an image of Sid as a reaction image. He eventually mates with Brooke, a female sloth. Throughout the Ice Age films, Sid exhibits parental behavior by caring for young creatures of various species. However, he is also caring and loyal, which makes him endearing to his animal companions. He is a comedic character, who speaks with a lisp, is often silly or dim-witted, and humorously hurts himself. His origins involve abandonment by the rest of his family, which led to a solitary life before the beginning of Ice Age. Sid the Sloth is based on modern three-toed sloths and the extinct ground sloths (Megalonyxs). In them, Sid, Manny, and Diego continue their adventures, finding mates, escaping other animals and dinosaurs, and traveling across the Earth (and outer space!).

Various animated shorts and television specials have also featured the misfit prehistoric trio. The Ice Age franchise now includes five films, the latest, Ice Age: Collision Course, released in 2016. In the midst of the Ice Age, the trio of animals undertake a journey to return a human baby to his family, from whom he has been separated. He is one of the three principal characters, alongside a wooly mammoth named Manny and a saber-toothed tiger, Diego.
